It is our pleasure to present this article in the editorial section of the journal Apunts. In this paper we analyzed a very important element for athletic performance: the competition.

We can observe how crucial is the correct design of athletic competitions and how its structure affects not only team performance, but also determines access to economic resources, sponsors, television contracts, attracting fans as well as the level of players and coaches who want to participate in that competition.

Teams face each other to win, but at the same time they collaborate in order to compete for resources against other sports. Hence the design and flow of the competition is relevant in a system that evolves over time.
